The Family Support Center of Salt Lake County (FSC) is headquartered at 1760 W 4805 S in Taylorsville, with additional facilities located in Salt Lake City, Midvale, and West Valley. It was the first Family Support Center to be established in Utah. The mission of the Family Support Center is to Protect Children, Strengthen Families and Prevent Child Abuse. The FSC was established in 1977 by the Junior League and the Utah Association of Child Therapists (U-ACT), who came together with a common concern: child abuse. At that time, there was no short-term respite care available for children at risk of abuse or neglect. To address this issue, the FSC began as a single Crisis Nursery, where overwhelmed parents could bring their children free of charge, 24/7, during times of high stress or crisis. It was hypothesized at the time that by removing a child from a stressful situation and allowing parents the space and freedom to resolve the situation that brought them to crisis, the risk of child abuse would decrease. This theory has since been supported by research done all across the country.

Within a few years of opening our 24-hour Crisis/Respite Nursery, the FSC realized that counseling would also be needed if there was to be meaningful, long-term impact to benefit families in crisis. As a result, Licensed Clinical Social Workers were hired, and a counseling program was developed. With the help of government, private, and community entities, additional programs have been implemented over time to facilitate the accomplishment of the FSC’s mission. As needs have been indentified and resources have become available, the agency has expanded and continues to evolve. The FSC now offers three crisis nurseries, counseling, community classes and support groups, a low-cost daycare, housing and self-sufficiency training for single homeless mothers and their children, adoption respite care, and in-home family mentoring.
